How to Participate

LOFATA accepts volunteers to support its Projects. The volunteers can help out in many different areas such as teaching, classroom construction, fundraising events, website editing and anything else that is needed.

Since LOFATA's projects are at the current moment still small in size, volunteers space is limited in each area. Applications are on a rolling basis so there are no deadlines for applying. Projects are ongoing and volunteers are always needed in different areas.

The Role of the LOFATA Volunteer

There are many ways in which our volunteers choose to spend their time and contribute towards LOFATA. Most volunteers spend a proportion of their time teaching the students and planning school activities. HIV/AIDS work, along with family planning and children care are other popular areas. Also, Volunteers can run fundraising projects to help with the ongoing school projects or sponsor a child program.

Volunteers can also care for the children and monitoring their health. They can arrange doctor and dentist appointments, record medical conditions and administer first aid. In addition, volunteers can choose to work with the student's parents by running family support groups, helping develop the family rehabilitation program.

Each volunteer brings their own skills, interests and experience to contribute to LOFATA. Volunteers who are staying for shorter visits can develop activities and projects for the while those who are staying for longer are able to run longer-term projects. It is ultimately up to the volunteer to decide what they would like to do for LOFATA and most end up having many projects. Volunteers are welcome at any of our projects.

Application

To apply to the volunteer program, applicants must submit the
Volunteer Application Form. After applying, you will receive confirmation that the submitted form was received, and you will be notified within one week whether you have been accepted. Once accepted, the volunteer is considered confirmed when he or she has submitted travel details to LOFATA by email.

Food & Lodging

Both food and lodging are included in our program fees. A Tanzanian family, in a private room within their home, usually provides lodging. Some houses have electricity and access to running water but some do not. Some homes are equipped with bathrooms within the house but some have outhouses. Toilets can be either western or eastern "squat" style. The host family will provide breakfast and dinner, and lunch will be offered at the project site. Volunteers are free to eat out at their own expense if desired. Many returned volunteer’s state the home stay as one of the most unique and rewarding experiences of their time with LOFATA. However, if you prefer a different form of accommodation, please notify us and every effort will be made to accommodate you, depending on demand.

Free Time

Most of your volunteer work will be conducted during the day, Monday through Friday, and volunteers are encouraged to explore Tanzania and its nightlife during the evening and weekends. Arusha is the starting point for visiting many of Tanzania's national parks and volunteers can arrange safaris to famous parks such as the Serengeti, Mt. Kilimanjaro or the Ngorongoro Crater as well as many others. Arusha also has reasonably-priced to most destinations in Tanzania, including Zanzibar. You may also want to visit the Maasai villages on the outskirts of Arusha where you can observe local dances and customs, or participate in Cultural Tourism programs that provide a unique look at village life.
